For those of you who don’t know, Work-Shop offers fun, affordable and ridiculously diverse short courses in arts, crafts and life skills. Classes range from street art and tattoo illustration, to botanical watercolours, calligraphy, leather wallet making and everything else you can possibly dream of.
The idea behind Work-Shop started over a beer when co-founders Chester Garcia and Matt Branagan were in a pub watching people robotically stare into their digital devices. They started brainstorming ways that they could ween people off their phones to have more tactile, real life experiences.
‘Our goal was to get people to step outside the distractions of everyday life and experience the joy of making things using their hands, hearts and minds. As you get older, you forget how fun and fulfilling it is to learn something new,’ says Garcia
This was in June 2013, and the guys have been on fire ever since. The Work- Shop team has unlocked people’s creativity with locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Art and community are at the heart of what they do so opening a Northern Rivers chapter made perfect sense.
‘The Northern Rivers is recognised as a mecca for creativity and, with it’s strong community values, we felt that it would be a great fit. We collaborate with local artists and industry experts to teach classes, and provide an inspiring environment where you can meet like-minded people,’ says Branagan.
Work-Shop will operate from The Lismore Art Space will be led by resident creative badass Joanna Kambourian.
‘We’re stoked to welcome Work-shop to the Northern Rivers and we are looking forward to facilitating people’s creativity through the diverse range of classes that will be on offer. It’s also wonderful to be able to promote and encourage the skilled and talented creatives we have in our region to teach their skills and inspire others!’ says Kambourian.
Classes will start on the 22nd of September, led by some of the Northern Rivers’ (and Australia’s) brightest creative minds. If you’ve got a mad skill and are keen to teach a class they’re urging local creatives to get in touch.
