Residency Workshop with Cheryl Field

Lismore Arts Space will be hosting Cheryl Field as their first international artist in residence throughout October!

After forays into the realms of Molecular Biology and Parasitology, Cheryl gave up the life of a research scientist and ran away to study art instead – first studying Sculpture & Environmental Art at The Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2007 and latterly for her Master’s of Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London, graduating in 2012. Despite a change in discipline, science remains firmly at the heart of her work where she is primarily preoccupied with investigating the role that popular science and science fiction plays in contemporary culture.

Cheryl will be hosting a one day workshop whilst in residence at LAS. The workshop will focus on the participants collaborating with Cheryl to make a series of giant inflatable structures. Playing with the physics of filing space, but doing so with the most insubstantial and temporal of materials; air, sound and light. On these works Cheryl says:

“To my mind these inflatables are neither ‘sculptures’ nor ‘objects’ per se, rather they are something closer to ‘devices’ in as much as they are a means to create an alternate space. The sheer volume and temporal nature of these shiny behemoths offers the audience a direct and immediate experience and encourages us to momentarily step sideways into another space and actuality, and in doing so we embrace an otherwise all to familiar space, differently.”

The workshop will begin with smaller scale experiments to give everyone a feel for the materials and the possibilities that they offer. We will then scale things up and make several huge inflatables to fill LAS. We will finish the workshop by documenting the work in the space and hopefully outside too. All materials will be provided, but if you have anything you would like to bring in addition, you would be very welcome to do so. Cheryl suggests that you should bring your own means of documenting the work that you’ve made.
