24 Jun Zine Fair Shakedown!
Lismore Art Space resident Ms Browns Lounge was a recent stallholder at the Musuem of Contemporary Art Sydney’s 2013 Zine Fair. In conjunction with Sydney Writers’ Festival, the MCA hosts a one-day festival dedicated to Sydney’s boutique zine makers. The limited run publications are often handmade and self-published. As a printmaker and graphic designer, I have a total love for zines and wanted to represent printmakers and artists from the North Coast of NSW and SE QLD who were making zines.
I put out the call and got a fantastic group of talented artists, designers and creatives from the region responded with an incredible selection of zines, from lyrical stories illustrated by poignant images, simple b&w photocopied publications heavy with meaning and humorous musings of artists. It was a great response and the zines were well received by the massive crowd that visited the zine fair, with our artists making some sales and being well promoted on the day.
The participating artists were also asked to include an edition for a folio which was collated and send out so that everyone who participated could have a copy of each others zines. It forms a significant folio of zines from artists working in the regional Northern NSW and SE QLD areas and we have just found out that one of the participants has agreed to donate her set to the collection at the State Library of QLD. Such an awesome outcome for the participants and a throughly enjoyable exchange of ideas and creative production.
Looking forward to participating in the 2014 Zine Fair and mounting another zine exchange after this fantastically successful collaborative project!
