01 Aug International Design Collaboration
Lismore Art Space manager & studio resident Joanna Kambourian (Ms Browns Lounge) has just launched an international Design Collaboration project with Singapore lifestyle brand, Matter, that has been a year in the making.
Matter are a socially motivated lifestyle brand connecting communities to opportunity, creating travel ware with stories to tell. Their mission is to inspire consumers to value provenance – to ask of the where and why something is made, and champion alternative production models for textile artisans to expand their economic freedom.
The collaboration resulted in 3 designs applied to hand block printed silk/cotton scarves, all handmade by 4th generation artisan printers in Jaipur, India.
These three motifs developed are an ode to Joanna’s Armenian-Dutch roots, drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns of her great grandfather’s rugs. An amalgam between ancient meanings and contemporary framework, Akin combines the strength of the Dragon, the healing properties of the Pomegranate, and the sealing protection from the Amulet. Derived from the word ‘kin’, Akin speaks of stories from the forgotten past, mapping out the threads that connect us to our ancestors.
There are three scarves and the first few designs purchased will also come with a limited edition screen print by Ms Browns Lounge, printed exclusively for the launch of the collaboration.
