24 Jun Beards & A Barn Raising
We are really pleased to be working together with the Lismore Regional Galleries Offsite project for Splendour in the Grass this year by providing a work space for artist Bennett Miller while he works on his BARNRAISER project which will take place at the new Splendour Site outside Byron Bay.
In 2013, the Gallery will be continuing its relationship with local music festival, Splendour in the Grass through the presentation of a major new work by Western Australian artist Bennett Miller. Miller has gained note around the globe for his captivating work, Dachshund U.N., an installation involving real dachshund’s representing each country at the United Nations.
In Miller’s new work, Barnraiser, an old style barn raising will take place in the grounds of Splendour for the duration of the festival. This sense of industriousness will be taking place against the hedonism of the festival.
This project was seeded out of the Splendid initiative, a program managed by the Gallery in collaboration with Splendour and the Australia Council with the support of NORPA. Splendid ran from 2009 – 2012 and facilitated emerging inter-disciplinary artists to create new works for a festival context. History of the initiative can be found here
Splendid was a Lismore Regional Gallery project that ran from 2009 to 2012 in partnership with Splendour in the Grass and supported by NORPA (Northern Rivers Performing Arts). It was an Opportunities for Young and Emerging Artists Initiative (OYEA) assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body and supported by Arts NSW.
